Product Carrier Redesign
A leading consumer product company experiencing problems on a product packing line that resulted in significant downtime, product loss, and replacement expense came to us to help develop a solution to prevent these costly issues. When a crash occurred on the product packing line, the rigid ABS plastic product carriers were being broken.
Challenge
We had to modify the product carrier to reduce the loss of product, time, and money in the event of a crash while keeping within specifications, including chemical resistance requirements.
Solution
We worked with the client to redesign the product carrier by incorporating a metal frame encapsulated in a 95A durometer thermoset elastomer. This new design helped absorb impact, preventing breakage during crashes and reducing the associated costs.
Outcome
The redesigned carriers were more flexible and more durable, and the thermoset elastomer exhibited fantastic chemical resistance to other materials. The resulting product performance was significantly improved on the packing line, with fewer disruptions and lower maintenance costs for the client.
Trade Show Models
A leading provider of Highway Safety Solutions wanted a way to demonstrate their products at trade shows, but this was otherwise impossible due to the size of the products.
Challenge
We needed to create a model that would accurately demonstrate the product’s features while staying within booth size limitations and associated shipping cost constraints.
Solution
We built scale models of the client’s products to help them display their safety solutions in a small, attractive package. The models solved the client’s concern about shipping and booth space because they were lightweight, durable, and easy to transport.
Outcome
The trade show models were well-received, helping the client communicate the benefits of their products while keeping shipping costs and logistics manageable.
Consumer Testing
A customer needed to conduct a consumer test utilizing their production polypropylene dispenser package with an attached applicator. The purpose of the test was to compare product application and consumer response for a variety of applicator surface textures. The current production applicator had a smooth surface, and the customer was curious as to whether a textured surface would improve consumer satisfaction.
Challenge
How to economically produce several textured applicator samples for use in the consumer test, utilizing the same injection-molded material they would use in full-scale production, without the cost of additional tooling.
Solution
We were able to produce the samples in the texture matrix by scanning and manipulating the scan data to create laser engraving programs that enabled us to laser-etch the textures onto the smooth surfaces of the current production applicators.
Outcome
Our client conducted their consumer test using production packaging and applicators, ensuring reliable product dispensing and application.
3D Putter Lift
When COVID-19 kept everyone inside, golf provided an opportunity to get outside. The one issue was retrieving the ball from the cup after putting. We designed and developed a product that allowed players to use their putter to retrieve their golf ball, hands, and germ-free.
Challenge
Developing a product that allowed golf courses to reopen and players to safely play without risking their health. It needed to be economical and easy to use without direction.
Solution
A product that requires no assembly, comes in a set of 18, and can be installed on the flag. From there, players turn the product in the direction they are putting and putt as normal. Then, players use their putter to pick up the 3D Putter Lift and retrieve their golf ball.
Outcome
Courses were able to reopen, allowing players to golf safely and enjoy the game as usual!
